SOAR Initiative contracted by UNESCO under the Spotlight Initiative conducted a two day training workshop of both teachers and guidance counsellors in AMAC and Bwari area councils alongside a consultative meeting held with principals of target schools which centred on the third pillar of the Spotlight Initiative which is prevention.
A one day stakeholders’ consultative meeting on, creating safe spaces in basic schools to prevent VAWG, SGBV and HP in the FCT held on the 22nd October, 2019 at Sharon Ultimate Hotel, Abuja with the aim of consulting with Principals and Education Authority across FCT, to introduce the project, secure approval, support and their buy-in to implement activities in their schools. Key dignitaries in attendance were; Mr. Mommadu Lawal, the Senior Project Specialist Education, UNESCO; Mrs. Rashida Apahade, the Deputy Director Gender, FCT Education Secretariat; Mrs. Nafisat Kote, representing Universal Education Board (UBEB).
The meeting featured activities such as group work in which the participants were divided into groups to brainstorm and carry out a SWOT analysis of the Girl’s club project.
Various positive remarks were given by particpants – “I gained more on how to handle the girl child and to encourage them”. said by Lawal Charity from LEA Primary School, Rafin Dei-Dei, Bwari. A total 72 participants were in attendance.
Teachers in AMAC and Bwari respectively were equipped with relevant knowledge required to end the menace of child sexual abuse in schools.
The training featured the rudiments of remedial classes that would be conducted by the English and mathematics teachers of the 60 schools include in the project, intricacies and functions of the girls club that would be set up in these schools to improve their knowledge of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Harmful Practices (HP).
The training for teachers in AMAC was held on the 17th – 18th of October 2019 at IBI Training Centre, Wuse 2 Abuja in which Mrs. Hadiza Aminu, the Coordinator of the Spotlight Initiative was in attendance and on the 28th – 29th of October 2019 for BWARI Area Council which was held at Junior Secondary School, Bwari Central, Abuja. It featured a session of a group work in which the participants were divided into groups to discuss the role of remedial support lessons in preventing VAWG/SGBV/HP. The trainings had a combined total number of 124 participants.
A two-day training for guidance counselors and gender officers in the selected project schools under the Spotlight Initiative activity in AMAC and Bwari Area council. The training for the guidance counselors and gender officers in AMAC was held on the 24th – 25th of October 2019 at IBI Training Centre, and 30th – 31st of October 2019 for BWARI Area Council which was held at Junior Secondary School Bwari Central, Abuja. The participants were divided into groups to discuss the role of school based girls club program in preventing VAWG/SGBV/HP. They were to brainstorm and come up with possible weakness, threats and to suggest a strategy or solution. The trainings had a combined total number of 115 participants.
